Run Forrest Run

Bikers in Solana Beach, Ca

I’m pretty sure that I’m in the heart of the exercise universe.

Southern California is a place where everyone seems to be moving. Constantly. They’re running, jogging and marathon training, both with and without baby carriers. They’re biking, road, mountain, unicycle, tandem, recumbent, and cruisers, all with and without baby carriers. Walking, speed and regular, again with and without baby carriers. Trail hiking. Surfing, parasurfing, windsurfing, body surfing and boogie boarding. Skateboarding and skating, both regular and inline. There are pilate studios, yoga studios, fitness studios, spinning studios, health clubs and gyms. Swimming, pool and ocean. Wind gliders and, of course, driving. Millions of them are driving. All the time. Now technically driving isn’t exercise, but with the aggressiveness and anxiety level applied to it here it will certainly burn off a few calories.

It’s Picture Time

We don’t just look at photos. Sometimes we even get our picture taken. Our good friend and most excellent photographer Bart Nagel asked us to pose for one of his “A/Symmetrical” portraits. Check out what Bart’s up to at: http://bartnagel.com/asymmetrical/index.html

On The Road Again.

Our annual “Get The Hell Out Of The Rain” trip is off to a great start. We have spent our first week in the Bay Area visiting family and friends and seeing as many great photos as possible. Our exploration began at the Oakland Museum of California with a great Richard Misrach show, “1991: Oakland-Berkeley Fire Aftermath”. Immediately after the fire Misrach roamed the devastated neighborhoods with an 8 x 10 camera recording what many have called one of the worst urban disasters in American history. Out of respect for the victims, the artist had kept the images in storage for 20 years.

Next up was the SFMOMA for the much celebrated Francesca Woodman Show. This is the first major American retrospective of the artist’s work since her tragic suicide in 1981 at the age of 22. In Francesca Woodman’s terribly short life she managed to compile a huge body of highly influencial and ground breaking photographic art, over 10,000 negatives and 800 prints.

We finished up at the Fraenkel Gallery in San Francisco with the Robert Adams’ “Consolations: Prairie, Forest, Sea” show. Astoria’s own, Robert Adams has had a huge influence on generations of artists. His refined black-and-white photographs document scenes of the American West of the past four decades, revealing the impact of human activity on the last vestiges of wilderness and open space.

Seaview – Part 1

On Saturday June 18th we will have our first “Art Night at the Marina” in Ilwaco. The Wade Gallery will show Part 1 of my Seaview collection.
The light is different up here. For are large portions of the year the sun hangs low in the sky creating a warm directional light source. At other times, it’s overcast making a soft diffused light. Either way, I’ve been in love with Seaview, Wa. for 23 years now. During that time I’ve amassed lots of images that have amused and intriqued me, or I just felt depicted how I think Seaview feels.

The Boys

My Studious Grandsons

On the way through the Bay Area I thought it would be nice to get a few shots of my Grandsons. Shots that will remind me of just how serious, studious and mature these lovely young men really are.

Travel Buddies

Yes, we are. We’ve been hitting the road together for a long time now. Things have changed  over time. Between Wendi, Emma and myself, we seem to have reached a phase in our lives where the pace of the trip is dictated by the availability of rest areas. On the positive side, if there is one, it’s probably nature’s way of saying “slow down and stop jiggling“. Even with all the rest stops I can’t imagine traveling without them.
